Minutes of the
Forest Preserve Committee


February 20, 2001


The DeKalb County Forest Preserve Committee met Tuesday, February 20, 2001 in the lodge at MacQueen Forest Preserve, at 6:00p.m. Chairman John Morreale called the meeting to order with Mr. Dlabal, Mr. Haines, Mr. Lyle, Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Sands, and Mr. Simonson present. Mr. Hannan and Mr. Duerr were also present. Mr. Guehler and Mr. Metzger were absent.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Moved by Mr. Dlabal, seconded by Mr. Haines, and it was carried unanimously with a voice vote to approve the minutes for January.

 

 

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Mr. Hannan asked the Committee for approval to add Mr. John Duerr, from the Kane County Forest Preserve District, as a guest speaker to the agenda. Moved by Mr. Simonson, seconded by Mr. Haines, and it was carried unanimously to approve the agenda with the addition of Mr. Duerr.

 

COUNTY BOARD RETREAT

Mr. Morreale stated that the County Board Retreat was on February 24, 2001 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Nature Resource Center in Russell Woods. Mr. Morreale asked the Committee if all members were planning to attend. No member reported that they intended to not attend the retreat. Mr. Morreale asked the Committee if anyone had any questions regarding the subject matter for the retreat. A brief discussion was held about open space acquisition in DeKalb County for future public open spaces. Mr. Hannan reviewed the materials to be presented at the retreat (Forest Preserve District acquisition plans and goals) with the Forest Preserve Committee. The materials presented were well organized and self explanatory, therefore leading to few questions. Mr. Guehler arrived at 6:12 p.m.

 

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Mr. Hannan introduced Mrs. Pat Shannon to the Forest Preserve Committee. Mr. and Mrs. Shannon are the Park Managers of the MacQueen Forest Preserve. Mrs. Shannon expressed her love of caring for the MacQueen Forest Preserve, and explained their duties and responsibilities that being a Park Manager entail. Mr. Sands questioned how the Park Manager position was compensated by the Forest Preserve District. Mr. Hannan explained that the Shannon’s live on the premises rent free in exchange for their labor at MacQueen Forest Preserve. The Shannon’s pay for their own utilities. Mr. Hannan gave an overview of the various Park Manager positions within the District, and how they were compensated also.


EXECUTIVE SESSION

Moved by Mr. Sands, seconded by Mr. Lyle, it was carried unanimously to move into executive session by roll call vote at 6:25 p.m. Moved out of executive session and a motion was made to direct the Forest Preserve Superintendent to continue efforts for future land acquisition of all, or portions, of the tract of land formerly known as the Calumet Council Boy Scout Camp located just Northwest of Village of Kirkland in Northwest DeKalb County. And upon completion, to bring back any plan developed for final approval of the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District Commissioners. Moved by Mr. Guehler, seconded by Mr. Dlabal, the motion carried unanimously by a voice vote.

 

ADJOURNMENT

Mr. Dlabal moved, Mr. Haines seconded, to adjourn the meeting and the motion passed with a unanimous voice vote.
