DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION DECEMBER 14, 2009
The meeting started at 7:02 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order. We had 12 members in attendance including Superintendant Herb Holderman, President Rich Joslin, Vice-President Mike Boorsma, Secretary Steve Walz, Treasurer John Davis, Jim Cox, Don Jones, Jerry Johnson and Frank Beierlotzer. The minutes were read and seconded by Don Jones, and were approved. The corporation financial report was given by John Davis and we have $1797.16 in the account, and the report was seconded by Mike Boorsma and it was approved. The Superintendants report was given by Herb Holderman and in October we assisted 68 veterans and the financial assistance amounted top $10,400.24. Also in the month of October, the Veterans Assistance Commission in conjunction with NIU gave a car away to a needy veteran, and we may do this a gain. We were audited in October and there were no problems. Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the $10,400.24 and this was seconded by Jon Lehuta. The motion passed. In the month of November we assisted 61 veterans and the financial assistance amounted to $11,226.52. Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the $11,226.52 and this was seconded by Jon Lehuta. The motion passed. Herb also mentioned that the IACVAC meeting will be January 15 and 16 in Bloomington. It has yet to be decided who will be going. Steve Scoughton asked if the Vet Fair is really helping our veterans. Jerry Paulsen contacted us and is thinking about doing a presentation to help veterans help themselves. He normally charges $1200 per person for his 8 hour presentation, but is willing to do the presentation for $100 a person for the VAC. After much discussion, it was decided that more research is needed. Some of the ideas that were brought up included doing this in conjunction with NIU and maybe getting other counties involved with this project. The other counties would be responsible for the financial responsibilities for their veterans. The Aurora Sportsman Club shoot for veterans was a big success and had a good turnout. The doll houses that are being made are scheduled for completion by Memorial Day, 2010. The doll house that is going to the White House will stay at the White House and not go with the Obama's. The Sycamore American Legion Auxiliary has donated 28 food baskets of staples for needy veterans. The 40 & 8 Christmas Dinner will be at the Indian Oaks Country Club in Shabbona at noon on the 20th. All veterans are invited. Rodger Glass died three months ago and his remains are still in Rockford. His brother has Power of Attorney but cannot be reached. We are trying to get his remains back here so we can give him a veteran’s burial. Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 7:47.
