COUNTY VETERANS
ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
FEBRUARY 9, 2009
The meeting started at 7:00 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to
order. We had 14 members in attendance including Herb Holderman, John Davis, Jon
Lehuta, Mike Boorsma, Frank Beierlotzer and Steve Walz. There were also three
special guests in attendance, Jesse Sheehan from Representative Pritchard’s
office, Lee Newtson from Cortland and Bill Campion.
Bill Campion is a retired Chicago police officer who collects military vehicles.
He talked about the military vehicles that are participating in the 2009
transcontinental convoy basically following the same route as the
transcontinental convoy that occurred after WWI. The convoy of at least 40 to 60
vehicles will be coming through DeKalb and spending the night in Rochelle. There
will be a dance in Rochelle with live music at the airport followed the next day
with a Sunday church service and a pancake breakfast. There will also be
military planes on display.
Lee Newtson makes doll houses that have electricity and operating windows and an
operating doorbell. He is going to make at least two identical doll houses, one
will go to the White House and the other will stay here and be raffled off as a
fund raiser for a cause that will be determined at a later date. The material
for one doll house will cost approximately $800 but there is no labor charge. We
would pay for the materials for both doll houses, and raffle off the second doll
house. The DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission will get the credit for
giving the doll house to the White House. Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to
do this and it was seconded by Mike Boorsma. The motion passed.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and seconded by Frank Beierlotzer.
The minutes were approved.
John Davis gave the corporation finance report and the corporation has 2200.08,
and the report was seconded by Don Jones. The finance report was approved.
Superintendent Herb Holderman gave the correspondence report and told us that
Tammy Duckworth is moving up to D.C. to work with the V.A. nationally and she is
being replaced by Dan Grant who will now head the Illinois Veterans Affairs
office. He is a Captain and a West Point graduate.
There was much discussion on the next Vet Fair and where it will be. It was
suggested that we might have it at DCVAC. There was also discussion about
combining it with a seniors fair and also covering women’s health issues. There
was some discussion about having a veteran’s town hall type meeting.
Superintendent Holderman gave his report and we helped 34 veterans with
financial assistance totaling $7761.00 and made eight trips to various VA
hospitals. Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the bills and this was seconded
by Jim Cox. The bills were paid.
Superintendent Holderman explained that the office needs a copier and there were
two bids. The first was from R. K. Dixon. They have a color copier and it would
cost $5510.00 or we could rent it for $136 a month for 60 months and $.01 a
copy. Gordon Flesch has a black and white copier for $4798.00 or we could rent
it for $98 a month for 60 months and $.008 a copy. When they price of the color
copiers comes down we could upgrade. Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to go
with the Gordon Flesch copier and this was seconded by Jon Lehuta. The motion
passed.
There was some discussion on whether to keep moving about the county for our
meetings or just to have them at the county home since we now have room here.
The consensus of opinion was that we should just keep the meetings here at the
DCVAC office but make up posters about the DCVAC and what we do, and how to
contact us and deliver them to all the different veterans’ organizations.
Don Jones made the motion to adjourn at 8:25.
