DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS

ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

JANUARY 12, 2009

The meeting started at 7:07 with Vice-President Mike Boorsma calling the meeting to order. We had 9 people in attendance including Mike Boorsma, Steve Walz, Don Jones, Jim Cox and Frank Beierlotzer.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and seconded by Jim Cox. The minutes were approved. There was no financial report of the corporation.

Superintendant Holderman gave his report and because of the bad weather Bill Campion could not make the meeting. The commission has not moved into the new building as of yet but we should be in there this week. We have been approved by the VA Education out of St. Louis to hire a work study. He is a young vet in his senior year and the VA will pay his wages of $8.25 an hour. Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to take over the flags in front of our new building. We will fly the American flag and the POW/MIA flags and we will also fund the flags. The motion was seconded by Jim Cox and the motion was approved. The IACVAC meets three times a year and there was some discussion on who should go. The next meeting of the IACVAC will be January 22 and 23. Frank Beierlotzer made the motion that any officer or employee could go and we would pay cost and per diem. Don Jones seconded the motion and the motion passed.

There was much discussion on the next Vet Fair ad where and when it should be. There was also much discussion on how involved we should get, whether just benefits or to include outreach and jobs. Next month we will make a decision on it. Linda Drake was asked to put the Vet Fair on the monthly reminder.

Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to pay the bills for the commission totaling $8937.35 and this was seconded by Jim Cox. The bills were paid.

Bill Campion will be at the next meeting and Bob Pritchard will also be here to talk about a raffle of a doll house made by a veteran from Cortland. February 28, there will be a party at the Genoa Vets Home put on by the Marine Corps league and it will be for all veterans.

Chuck Siebrasse has cancer and there will be a roast for him at the DeKalb Taylor airport on January 31. Tickets must be purchased by January 22. Rodger Glass is doing badly, and Don Brown has had surgery but is still having problems.

There was some discussion on developing sympathy cards and get well cards to be from the commission and Linda Drake will try to come up with something appropriate.

There was a motion by Frank Beierlotzer to adjourn at 8:07.

Respectfully Submitted

Steve Walz, Secretary
