DEKALB COUNTY

VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

JULY 13, 2009

The meeting started at 7:03 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order.  We had 10 members in attendance including, Rich Joslin, Mike Boorsma, Steve Walz, John Davis Don Jones and Jim Cox.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and seconded by Jerry Johnson.  The minutes were approved.

John Davis gave the corporation finance report and the corporation has $1797.16.  The finance report was seconded by Mike Boorsma and was approved.

Herb Holderman gave the superintendants report, and in April we assisted 32 veterans, in May we assisted 45 veterans, and in June we assisted 62 veterans.  Because of the economy we are approximately 220% over budget in direct assistance.  There was much discussion on how to handle the increase in taking veterans to the different VA facilities, on whether to buy another car or if we can get a VA doctor to come out to DeKalb.  There is a good possibility that we will be expanding the office hours to 7 or 8 in the evenings once or twice a week.  Herb will also be presenting us with the new budget for next year in August.

The Vet Fair is coming along and so far 19 businesses have signed on to participate.  The fair will be September 19 in our building.  Herb will be talking to John Duback about how much he will be expecting to earn for his work on the Vet Fair.

Jim Cox made the motion to pay the commission bills for May and June, and this was seconded by Mike Boorsma.  The May bills totaled 8588.64, and the June bills totaled 37,428.26.  The increase in the June bill is because the $25,000 rent was due.  The bills were paid.  We have paid $150,000 for our part of the building and $25,000 rent and these items will be added to the budget.  We also follow the county on wages and benefits.

Herb will be talking to the Voluntary Action Center ad see if they will still take vets to Hines and we may take over taking vets to Rockford, Elgin and Aurora.

We will have a booth at the Sandwich Fair with Viet Now and the Marine Corps League

At 7:55, Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn and it was approved.

Respectfully Submitted

Steve Walz, Secretary
