DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS

ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

MARCH 9, 2009

     The meeting started at 7:03 with President Rich Joslin presiding.  We had 13 members in attendance including Rich Joslin, Steve Walz, John Davis, Frank Beierlotzer, Jim Cox and Bill Davis. 

     The minutes of the previous meeting were read and Jon Lehuta seconded the report.  The minutes were approved as read.

     John Davis gave the corporation financial report and we spent $330.34 on the doll houses so far and there is now a balance of $1869.69.  Jon Lehuta seconded the report and the report was approved.

     Superintendent Holderman gave his report and we assisted 43 people.  We assisted 19 with shelter and $1000 on food.  The superintendent stated that the recession is affecting us and we may have to spend up to $120,000 this year on assistance.

     Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to have the Vet Fair at the DCVAC building instead of at the Kishwaukee College and this was seconded by Don Jones.  The motion passed.  There was some discussion about focusing more on jobs and health issues and Superintendent Holderman will check on an appropriate date for the Vet Fair.

     Unfinished business, the doll houses should be ready by Memorial Day.  There was discussion on where to give the proceeds of the doll house raffle and Gary Keegan made the motion to donate the money to Fisher House and this was seconded by Jon Lehuta.  The motion passed.

    New business, Jon Lehuta made the motion to pay the commissions bills and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  The bills will be paid.  There was some discussion on whether or not to have a June meeting as the officers will be in San Diego for a conference.  Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to skip the June meeting and this was seconded by Jon Lehuta.  The motion passed.  The County Home is looking for someone to speak to the veterans at the home about their service.  Will County is looking for a superintendent for their VAC.  President Rich Joslin presented the commission with an article from the Sun-Times about PTSD and the possible consequences for returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.  NIU would like to be the premier University for veterans and will help them get enrolled.  There are presently 546 veterans at NIU.  There will be a vet cruise in November for Veterans Day.  Frank Beierlotzer made the motion to adjourn at 7:52.  We were adjourned
