DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS

ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

OCTOBER 12, 2009

The meeting started at 7:05 with President Rich Joslin presiding.  We had 12 members in attendance.   Rich Joslin introduced Wayne Slagle who is retired Navy and has a new business that works with Alzheimer patients.  Among those present were Rich Joslin, Mike Boorsma, Jim Cox, Jerry Pelan and Don Jones.

Superintendant Holderman gave his report and we helped 72 people for a total of $11,606.57.  With car expenses, the commission spent $13,276.74.    NIU has started a new class about being a vet in college and how best to get along with other students.   The Red Cross has money for WWII vets and is trying to figure out what to do with it.  They have been thinking about going to the nursing homes with some of the money.  The commission was at the DeKalb County Fair but it did not go over very well, and we may have to reconsider this for next year, but the Vet Fair went over very well with a lot of positive responses.  The Vietnow vigil will be October 30 and 31 for anybody that is interested.  The November meeting will be cancelled due to so many members being gone that month.  Charity Cars is donating a car to a deserving vet who has the means to keep the car up for a year, and then the car will be theirs.    The county board worked out a budget for us for next year and it will be $578,000.  Currently we are at 85.20% of our budget for this year.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the commission bills totaling $13,276.74 and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  The bills were paid.

Public relations there will be a welcoming home ceremony for returning vets at the Sycamore High School October 18 at 10:00 in the morning.  Saturday November 7, there will be a Vets Shoot by the Kane County Gun Club.  The shoot will be one mile south of Waterman on Ruff Rd and will start at 8.  This is free to all veterans.

Jerry Pelan announced that there will be a Veterans Day observance held at the Sycamore High school on November 10 and this will start at 7:30 at the flag pole in front of the school.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 7:40 and this was seconded by Don Jones.

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
