FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT COMMITTEE
MINUTES
April 20, 2010
The DeKalb County Forest Preserve District Committee met Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at
the County Administration Building, Conference Room East at 6:00 p.m. In attendance
were committee members, Ms. Fauci, Ms. DeFauw, Mr. Newport, Mr. Anderson, Mr.
Augsburger, Mr. Walt, Mr.Gudmunson and Superintendent Hannan. Ms. Turner arrived
after the meeting had begun.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ms. Fauci called the meeting to order and then asked if there were any changes to the
March 16, 2010 minutes. Mr. Augsberger moved to approve the minutes as noted,
seconded by Ms. DeFauw and the motion passed unanimously.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Ms. Fauci asked if there were any changes to the agenda. Hearing none, Mr. Walt move
to accept the amended agenda, seconded by Mr. Anderson and the motion passed
unanimously.
WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS
CHAIR’S COMMENTS
Ms. Fauci noted that the tree planting went very well on Saturday even though the
attendance was lighter than hoped for. Mr. Hannan noted that 200 trees were planted by
volunteers at the Afton addition and the Lion’s club cleaned up a three mile stretch of
Route 64. Many other Spring volunteer efforts such as trail clean ups, tree, prairie and
wetland plantings by the DeKalb Kiwanis, NIU volunteers, scouts, Kishwaukee Sunrise
Rotary and others. ( see photos in monthly report).
FOREST PRESERVE MONTHLY REPORTS AND GENERAL DISCUSSION
Mr. Hannan noted that he would be passing out the annual renewal of the PDRMA
coverage for the District. He noted that PDRMA insures approximately 140 park districts
and 8 Forest Preserve Districts in Illinois. He noted that the District recently sponsored
chain saw safety training tat the MacQueen Preserve and the some of the large logs that
were cut will be used for the Ellwood - Miller Cabin restoration.
Also the District may bid out path improvements for parts of the limestone path on the
Great Western Trail. The trail was paved with limestone screenings over 25 years ago and needs work.
He then indicated that the Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary may be attending, but had not yet
arrived. The Kishwaukee Sunrise 8k run and 2 mile walk is May 15th at Potawatomi
Woods. He noted that he had no further reports and that staff reports are included in the
monthly packet.
Mr. Hannan noted that the annual Forest Preserve audit had been completed by Sikich
LLC. He will provide the audit package to the committee members for review at the May
meeting.
Mr. Hannan then noted that Ms. Doty had sent a letter she had received from a teacher,
Susan Mullins. She noted that she was extremely impressed by the work done by Ms.
Doty and the staff of the Natural Resource Center.
Mr. Hannan then noted that he had also recently invited to an Earth Day activity at
Wright School in Malta to talk about conservation and our environment to students. Mr.
Hannan gave out trees to the students to plant at home and at their school.
LAND ACQUISITION UPDATE
Ms. Fauci then asked for a motion to enter Executive Session. Ms. Turner moved the
Committee into executive session for the purpose of discussing current information on
District land acquisition, seconded by Mr. Walt.
Following the Executive Session, Mr. Anderson moved to return the Committee to public
session, seconded by Ms. Turner. A roll call vote was held and the motion passed with 7
Committee members voting in the affirmative and none in the negative and one absent on
the land acquisition proposal and to forward this recommendation to the full board for
approval.
ADJOURMENT
Mr. Augsburger moved to adjourn, seconded by Ms. Turner and the motion passed
unanimously.
