VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

APRIL 12, 2010

The meeting started at 7:00 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order.  We had 13 members in attendance including Rich Joslin, Mike Boorsma, Frank Beierlotzer John Davis, Steve Walz Jerry Pelan and Jim Cox and Don Jones.

The minutes were read and they were seconded by Don Jones.  They were accepted as read.  John Davis gave the corporation financial report and we have $1744.99 in the account and there was no activity last month.  Don Jones seconded the report and it was approved.

Correspondence; Kishwaukee College is having a training and employment expo on Wednesday April 21 from 5 – 8 P.M. and Thursday April 22 from 9:00 A.M. to noon.  We received a flyer with phone numbers that homeless veterans can call to receive help. The number is 1-877-424-3838.  The VA is trying to reach Desert Storm vets and other vets up to the present time that have been wounded because they may be able to get better benefits due to the fact that the military while trying to cut costs downplayed their injuries.

Herb Holderman gave the commission report, and we helped 20 vets with food, 20 with shelter, and 17 with utilities.  We also transported 9 vets to various hospitals.  The expenses this month totaled $9692.43.  This year, we have spent $84,430.00 which is 14.86% of our yearly budget.

Steve Scoughton told us that he has been working on the Vet Fair with the NIU Vets Club and it will probably be at the NIU Field house in September.  Frank Beierlotzer has been working on the afterhours with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and we will probably be hosting them in November.  One of the doll houses is completed and the other is almost done.  Since there has been no response from Michelle Obama, some of our members will be going along to help pick out the interior decorations.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the commission bills of $9692.43 and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  The bills will be paid.  The program put on by Jerry Paulsen productions will be advertised during the Vet Fair and will probably be held in November.  Due to lack of participation, we will no longer be going to Hinckley but will be spending the whole day in Waterman.

April 24 will be the Marine Corps League Draw Down at the Sycamore Veterans Home.  May 1, Viet now will be holding their 25th anniversary party at the Genoa Vets club.  DuPage will be having a Texas Hold-em Tournament at the Villa Park VFW from 2 to Midnight.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 7:45.

Respectfully Submitted

 Steve Walz, Secretary
