DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS

ASSISTANCE COMMISION

JANUARY 11, 2010

The meeting started at 7:02 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order.  We had 10 members in attendance including Mike Boorsma, Jim Cox, Frank Beierlotzer, Don Jones, Steve Scoughton, Tammy Anderson, Linda Drake, and Jon Lehuta.

The minutes were read and seconded by Mike Boorsma and were approved as read.  There was no Corporation treasurers report.

The superintendants report stated that we helped 78 veterans and their families for a total bill of $10,801.73.  Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the bills and this was seconded by Don Jones.  The bills will be paid.

Steve Scoughton stated that he has been going to Sandwich the second Tuesday of every month and has been seeing between 8 and 10 veterans there every month.  However Herb Holderman has been going to Hinckley on the fourth Tuesday every month and not many people are showing up.

The Vet Fair may be at the NIU Convo Center next year and may get the NIU Vets Club involved, or another choice is to get the NIU ROTC involved and have it at the Field House.

Jerry Paulsen could not make our meeting this month but ill try to be here next month.

Frank Beierlotzer is working on having another veteran’s weekend this year and it will be in conjunction with some other thing that will be happening in the county.  Our meetings are posted on the County website and on the doors at the outreach building, but there was some discussion on whether we also need to post them in the paper.  This will be looked into.  The Commission already belongs to the DeKalb and Sycamore Chambers of Commerce and Genoa would like us to belong to their Chamber of Commerce also.  Mike Boorsma made the motion to join the Genoa Chamber of Commerce and this was seconded by Jon Lehuta.  The motion passed.

Linda Drake told us that the commission is about 300% over budget on financial assistance to veterans and their families.  Because of this problem caused by the poor economy, we have had to cut back on the amount of money we give to families for food.  There was much discussion on this and it has been decided that since the vets going to college are getting approximately $1500 a month in assistance from the federal government from the G.I. Bill, they should not be getting assistance from us as that as that could be construed as double dipping.  A motion was made by Mike Boorsma to curtail this practice and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  The motion passed.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 7:34 and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  We were adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted

Steve Walz Secretary
