DEKALB COUNTY

VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

MARCH 8, 2010

The meeting started at 7:00 with President Rich Joslin presiding.  We had 13 members in attendance including President Rich Joslin, Vice –President Mike Boorsma, Secretary Steve Walz, Treasurer John Davis, Don Jones, Tom Wicker, Frank Beierlotzer, and Jim Cox.

The floor was opened up to Cheryl Kaspar who talked to us about a program that she and her husband would like to put on for veterans.  This will be a one day class to teach the vets how to communicate better and helping them build confidence when dealing with the public and applying for jobs.  This is normally a $600 course that Jerry Paulsen will be putting on for $100.  We would cover half of the cost after the vet completes the class.  We will be working with the NIU vets club and maybe the National Guard to get in touch with vets to let them know about the course.

The minutes were read and Mike Boorsma made the motion to accept the minutes as read and this was seconded by Don Jones.  The minutes were approved.  John Davis gave the corporation financial report and we have a balance of $1739.99.  Mike Boorsma seconded the report and the report was approved.

Herb Holderman gave the Superintendants report and in February we spent $8426.72 for needy veterans and their families, and made 7 trips to various VA hospitals.  For the year 2009, we spent $111,372.14 helping 648 needy vets.  We made 93 trips to hospitals and the gas cost $2247.44.  Over the year there were 1224 veterans in the office which is approximately 102 a month.

Steve Scoughton told us that the Vet Fair will combine with the NIU Vets Fair and we can then work together and probably have more contacts and more vendors.  The next Vet Fair will be in late September or early October and probably be at the NIU Field House.

Frank Beierlotzer told us that the county board after hours get together is always on the second Tuesday of the month so they will not be coming to our meeting but he is trying to host them in November.    The next vet weekend will be from July 24 until August 1, 2010, and will include many activities that will honor veterans.  The Mayor’s Breakfast will once again be at Carl’s Fargo Restaurant and will go from 6:45 A.M. to 7:30 A.M.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the Commissions bills’ totaling $8426.17 and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  The bills will be paid.

Dan McGary talked about the DuPage Medical Group.  The medical group will present a seminar focusing on the state of military medicine and will include the evaluation and treatment of PTSD and TBI.  The seminar will be Friday April 9, 2010 in Downers Grove from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.  Lunch will be provided.

American Legion Post 1010 will be putting on a corned beef and cabbage dinner at the Varsity in Kingston on Saturday 13.  The Sycamore Vets club will be having one on March 15, Genoa Vets Club will be having one on the 17th and the DeKalb American Legion Post 66 is having one on the 13th.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 8:07 and this was seconded by Jim Cox and Don Jones.

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
