DEKALB COUNTY

VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

MAY 10, 2010

The meeting started at 7:00 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to orderWe had 10 members in attendance including Rich Joslin, Mike Boorsma, John Davis, Steve Walz, Jerry Pelan, Frank Beierlotzer and Jim Cox.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and seconded by Jerry Pelan.  The minutes were approved.  The corporation financial report was read by John Davis and we have $1744.99 in the account.  The report was seconded by Mike Boorsma and the report was approved.

Herb Holderman stated that we assisted 21 veterans with general assistance totaling $10357.61, and we also made 11 trips to various VA facilities.  The total expenses for the month, including salaries totaled $40181.75.

Jerry Pelan told us that the Sycamore High School will be having a Memorial Day observance on May 28, starting at 7:30 A.M.

Chicago will be having a Chicago welcome home parade reunion in June 2011.

The DeKalb and Sycamore chambers of commerce are having a Link Up Expo at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA Sports Center on Tuesday May 11 from 3 to 7 P.M.  This is now open to the public and Linda Drake will be representing the DCVAC.  Due to health problems and other extenuating circumstances, the doll house is still on hold.  Our budget is looking very good, so there was some discussion on maybe using the extra money for dental care for veterans.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the commissions bills totaling $40181.75, and this were seconded by Jim Cox.  The bills will be paid.  Steve Scoughton told us that there have been some problems with NIU in trying to use the Field House for the Vet Fair.  As time is getting short we may be having it at the county building again.  Two weeks after the Vet Fair is when Jerry Paulson will be putting on his production to try to help vets get jobs and generally improve themselves.

Frank Beierlotzer talked about the different things that will be going on for Veterans Day.  He is also working on hosting the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce after hours, probably the 2nd Tuesday in November.  We will be serving snacks and maybe some drinks, and Herb Holderman will be checking into this.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 7:45.

Respectfully Submitted

Steve Walz, Secretary
