DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS

ASSISTANCE COMMISION

FEBRUARY 8, 2010

The meeting started at 7:02 with President Rich Joslin presiding.  There were 10 members in attendance including, Rich Joslin, Mike Boorsma, Jerry Pelan, Frank Beierlotzer, Tom Wicker, Don Jones, Jim Cox and Steve Walz.

The minutes were read and Mike Boorsma made a motion to accept the minutes as read and this was seconded by Don Jones.  The minutes were approved.  There was no corporation finance report.

Herb Holderman gave his report, and we spent $11,742.00 in assistance to needy veterans and their families.  We also made 6 trips to Madison, with a total of 9 veterans at a cost of $233.47.  We will start splitting the fourth Tuesday of each month between Hinckley and Waterman to better assist the veterans from the middle part of the county.  For the fiscal year of 2009, we came out just 2% over budget.  This year so far, we have used 5.35% of our 2010 budget.  Mike Boorsma made the motion to pay the commission’s bills and this was seconded by Don Jones.  The bills will be paid.

Steve Scoughton has been working on the 2010 Vet Fair.  We can get the Convo Center for approximately $500 and a small additional fee for tables, and we would have plenty of room.  We would be doing this in conjunction with the NIU Vets Club.  He is also checking on the Field house and that would be in conjunction with ROTC.  Jerry Paulson or his wife will come and talk to us at our next meeting.

Frank Beierlotzer is working on the third annual veteran’s weekend in conjunction with Kishwaukee Fest.  He would like to have veterans recognized at the USO Show.  There will also be a parade that veterans can participate in and he is working on having a veterans shoot at the Aurora Sportsman Club.  There will be a veteran’s recognition at the NIU stadium in conjunction with the Drum and Bugle Corps Championship.  There will be an opening flag ceremony at the start of the Sycamore cart show, and there will be a flag changing ceremony at the DeKalb County Courthouse put on by the Marine Corps League.  The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce has after hours, and there was some discussion on having our Commission host this on the same day as our meeting.  The cost for this would be minimal.

Mike Boorsma made the motion to adjourn at 7:44 and this was seconded by Tom Wicker.

Respectfully submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
