DEKALB COUNTY

VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

JUNE 13, 2011

The meeting started at 7:00 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order. There were 9 members in attendance. Frank Beierlotzer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and Don Jones made the motion to accept the minutes as read and this was seconded by Frank Beierlotzer. The minutes were approved. John Davis gave the corporation financial report and there is $1305.02 in the account. Don Jones seconded the report and the report was approved.

Herb Holderman gave the superintendants report, and the commission helped 25 veterans with food and utilities and 26 veterans with shelter. The commission also helped veterans recover over $205,000 in back pay. We also took 8 veterans to various VA Hospitals. To date this year we have brought back $23,805 in monthly benefits and $367,632.00 in retroactive monies to veterans in DeKalb County. This month we spent $204,799.90, and we also made our final payment of $175,000 to the county for our portion of the building that we are in.

Frank Beierlotzer reminded us of the fourth annual veteran weekend in DeKalb County. It will be held at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport on July 29,30, and 31. Frank also talked about WLBK's Freezing for Food program.

There was some discussion on moving our meeting place for the commission around the county to increase interest.  It was decided that in July we will be meeting in Genoa, October will be in Sandwich, January 2012 in Genoa, and April in Sandwich. There was also much discussion on paying the county mileage rates to members coming to our meetings. This was tabled until next month for further discussion and a vote. The commission employees will also be included in this plan.

The Sons of the American Legion are still looking for projects to help veterans. We also need to update our ad on WLBK as the phone number is wrong.

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
