DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION

MAY 9, 2011

The meeting started at 7:00 WITH President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order.  There were 10 members in attendance.  Frank Beierlotzer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  The minutes of the previous meeting were read and Don Jones made the motion to accept the minutes.   This was seconded by Jon Lehuta.  The minutes were approved.  John Davis gave the corporation financial report and there is $1200.12 in the account.  Don Jones seconded the report and the report was approved.

Herb Holderman gave the superintendants report and we helped 28 veterans with food, 29 with shelter, and 14 with utilities.  For the month we recovered over $12,000 for 5 veterans.  We spent $39,636.40 for the month.  To date we have spent 25% of our budget.   Herb also gave the commission members a detailed report of where the monies went, and also a breakdown of where the monies went over the last five years.

Frank Beierlotzer told us about the good write-up in the Daily Chronicle about the honor flight.  Frank has collected money from the open house last November and the extra money will be used for other projects.  Frank also talked about how we need to follow our by-laws closer.

Don Jones made the motion to pay the bills totaling $39,636.40 and this was seconded by Jim Cox.  The bills will be paid.  There was much discussion on the proposed garage, and Frank Beierlotzer gave us three options.  We decided that there will not be a garage at this time.  There was some discussion on the proposed SAL project and a lot of discussion on the veteran’s park on Harvestore Drive.

A grant for dental work for veterans is being filed.  Since our building is now paid off, there was discussion on what to do with the extra monies.  Some of the ideas were dental work, eye glasses, hearing aids and scholarships.

The Chicago Slaughter, an indoor arena football team is offering free tickets to veterans form their game on Saturday the 14th.

Steve Walz made the motion to adjourn at 8:10.

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
