DEKALB COUNTY VETERANS ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
DECEMBER 10, 2012

The meeting started at 7:00 with President Rich Joslin calling the meeting to order.  There were 13 members in attendance.  Frank Beierlotzer led us in the pledge of allegiance.  President Joslin then announced that Tammy Anderson has been nominated to be the next superintendent of the DCVAC.  She will be taking over the commission on January 1, 2013.  The minutes of the previous meeting were read and Don Jones made the motion to accept the minutes as read.  Vic Ingram told us that his name was misspelled.  With that correction, Frank Beierlotzer seconded the minutes and the minutes were approved.  John Davis gave the corporation treasurer’s report and there is $1546.00 in the account.  Bob Bend seconded the report and the report was approved.  There was some discussion if we should keep charging a small fee to the various veterans’ organizations and it was decided that the fee would still be charged.

Herb Holderman had us read a letter from Robert “Lee” Newtson about the doll houses.  In the letter he explained about his continuing health problems and he did not know when he would be able to finish the project.  It has been at least five years since the project was started, therefore, Herb Holderman and Steve Walz will check out what has been accomplished so far and try to finish the doll houses.

President Rich told the commission that the committee had decided that all members should receive a 2% pay increase starting January 1.  Frank made the motion and it was seconded by Don Jones.  The motion was approved.  Tammy Anderson will be starting out at the minimum pay for supervisor, but would receive a pay raise in 6 months if she works out.  It was recommended that Steve Kreitzer should become a full time employee.  Frank made the motion to do this and it was seconded by Don.  The motion was approved.

In November, the commission helped 34 veterans with food, 23 with shelter and 19 with utilities.  We helped 6 vets recoup $9028.00 in monthly benefits and retro pay totaling $15,900.00.  We also transported 22 vets to area VA hospitals.  The commission spent $38,239.36 for the month of November, and Don made the motion to pay the bills and this was seconded by Vic.  The November bills will be paid.   In December, the commission helped 26 vets with food, 17 with shelter and 12 with utilities.  We helped 3 vets recoup $6970.00 in monthly benefits and retro pay totaling $73,872.00.  We also transported 28 veterans to various VA hospitals.  The commission spent $35,860.55 for the month of December, and Bob made the motion to pay the bills and this was seconded by Vic.  The bills will be paid.

Steve Kreitzer attended classes to learn how to write grants.  He also oversaw the 24 locations that were giving free oil changes to veterans for Veterans Day.  Steven Scoughton was in charge of cooking pork chops for the waiting customers.  Steven also mentioned that area dentists gave away approximately $25,000 worth of free dental work for Veterans Day.

Frank informed us that the United States Air Force band will be playing at the Egyptian Theater on Friday night the 14th.  He also told us that the 40 & 8, in cooperation with the Masonic Lodge in DeKalb will be having a blood drive January 17th at the Masonic Lodge at the corner of Fairview and South 4th Street between 3P.M. and 7 P.M.  As of January 1, the county mileage goes up to 56.5 cents per mile.  Don made the motion to adjourn at 7:36.  We were adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
