A special meeting of the Highway Committee of the DeKalb County Board was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 7:00pm in the Freedom Room of the DeKalb County Legislative Center, Sycamore, Illinois.

Chairman Gudmunson called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. Committee members present were Mr. Frieders, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Jones, Mr. O'Barski and Vice Chair Pietrowski. Others present were Mr. Nathan Schwartz, County Engineer, Wayne Davey, Support Services Manager and DeKalb County Board Member Misty Haji-Sheikh. Committee Member Deverell was absent.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA:

Motion made by Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. O'Barski to approve the agenda as presented. The motion passed unanimously.

PUBLIC COMMENT: None

AWARD RESOLUTION 2013-83: TIMBER PILE REPAIRS

Mr. Schwartz explained to the Committee that bids were received and opened on October 9, 2013 for the timber pile repairs on three bridges in DeKalb County. Two bridges are in Squaw Grove Road District on Pritchard and Lee Roads and one in Shabbona Road District on Shabbona Grove Road. A total of 17 piles will be repaired by cutting out the damaged portion of the wooden pile and replacing it with a steel H-beam. The top of the replacement beam will be attached to the bridge deck by welding and the bottom bolted on the remaining length of the wooden piling. The bottom portion of the splice will be encased in concrete and these repairs are expected to extend the life of the bridge approximately 20 years. This is a relatively new procedure and as more companies become familiar with this repair procedure the County should see a reduction in cost. All bridge decks are in satisfactory condition and the County Engineer recommended approval of this award to Sjostrom & Sons from Rockford, Illinois. A motion was made by Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. O'Barski to forward this resolution to the full County Board recommending approval. The motion passed unanimously.
