May 13, 2013
7 p.m.

PRINTABLE DOCUMENT (.pdf)

The meeting started at 7:00 with Frank Beierlotzer leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 11 members in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and Don Jones made the motion to accept the report as read and this was seconded by Randy Smith. The report was approved. There was no corporation financial report. There was some discussion on the grave medallions that are available through the VA.

Superintendent’s report, last month the commission helped 23 veterans with food, 20 with shelter and 12 with utilities. We also transported 36 veterans to various VA Hospitals. The commission helped veterans collect $10,188.00 in pay and retro pay totaling $69,456.00. There was discussion on the new report form and how it is easier to read and understand. There were a few revisions that the members would like to have done, including what part of the county the veterans came from that we helped. Then we discussed how to better reach veterans in the community and let them know what we are about. The expenditures for the month totaled $35,895.37. Don Jones made the motion to pay this amount and this was seconded by Bob Bend. The bills will be paid.

Frank Beierlotzer gave the public relations report. Monday, May 27, the Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast will take place at the Jane Fargo Hotel starting at 6:45, and then the participants will proceed to the Joiner cemetery for a short service. There will be a motorcycle/motorcade military VIP escort. Then he informed us of all the other programs going on throughout the county on that day.

Herb Holderman told us that the doll house will be finished in June or July. Linda Drake asked whether we will continue to move our meetings around the county or just have all the meetings at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road. There was some discussion on this and Steve Kreitzer said that he can go back to the attendance sheets to see if moving the meeting is worthwhile and we will revisit this question in October or November.

The DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission is a county wide veterans’ support organization assisting all veterans. Contact us at 815-756-8129 or visit us at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road, Suite A. You do not need to be a member of any veteran organization for us to assist you with your benefits.

Don Jones made the motion to adjourn at 7:37 and this was seconded by Steve Walz. We were adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Walz, Secretary
